Each martial arts dojo has its own system of belt rank, testing, and time required between belts. Below is a summary of the requirements for each belt at Karate North Tae Kwon Do. Our poomse are Chung Bong 1 through 7. [Chung Bong 1 through 6 are available in pdf form on the Chung Bong Poomse page.]Unfortunately, Master Hyon only developed 7 poomse before retiring. One-steps teach the student one or two specific self-defense techniques. NOTE: Everyone starts as a white belt.

White to 8th Grade Gold [minimum 3 months or 25-30 lessons]

  • Chung Bong 1
    • 6 assigned one-step techniques

8th Grade Gold to 6th Grade Green [minimum of 25-30 lessons]

  • Chung Bong 1 and 2 in sequence and 2 alone or with a small group of like belt ranked students
  • 4 assigned one-step techniques
  • Freestyle sparring demonstration

6th Grade Green to 4th Grade Purple [minimum of 60-80 lessons]

  • Chung Bong 1, 2, 3 in sequence and 3 alone or with a small group of like belt ranked students
  • Assigned kicking series
  • Freestyle sparring demonstration

4th Grade Purple to 2nd Grade Brown [minimum of 90-100 lessons]

  • Chung Bong 1 through 4 in sequence and 4 alone or with a small group of like belt ranked students
  • 4 one-steps created by the student and approved by instructor[s]
  • Freestyle sparring demonstration

2nd Grade Brown to 1st Grade Brown [minimum of 90-100 lessons]

  • Chung Bong 1 through 5 in sequence and 5 alone or with a small group of like belt ranked students
  • Assigned kicking demonstration perfomed with a partner
  • Freestyle sparring demonstration

1st Grade Brown to 1st Degree Black [minimum of one calendar year from achievement of 1st Grade Brown]

  • Chung Bong 1 through 6 in sequence and 6 alone
  • Individually created poomse with or without a weapon OR one-steps and approved by instructor[s]
  • Assigned kicking series [spin and jump/spin kicks] with a partner
  • Freestyle sparring demonstration

1st Degree Black to 2nd Degree Black [minimum of two calendar years from achievement of 1st Black]

  • Chung Bong 1 through 7 in sequence and 7 alone
  • Individually designed poomse with or without a weapon or one-steps
  • Freestyle sparring demonstration

2nd Degree Black to 3rd Degree Black and Above [2.5 years to 3rd Black]

  • By arrangement

2nd Grade Brown belt will have a black stripe around it, and ALL belts may have a color stripe of the next belt level if the test was above and beyond what was expected [Recommended High]. After a test, the panel of judges meet in private to discuss each individual's performance according to their level and ability. The individual's overall test is judged in the following ways:

  1. Recommended high: Results in a colored stripe of the next belt level
  2. Decided: Excellent test. The student executed skills as expected for belt rank
  3. Recommended low: Good test. The student must hone specific skills of current rank prior to testing for the next belt rank test
  4. Fail: this does happen
